Working at MERICS

The Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) has become one of the most important European institutions for questions about today’s China. With some 20 experts covering various disciplines, MERICS is the world’s largest independent research institute focusing on contemporary China. Experts from seven European countries, China, Singapore, Australia and the United States analyze China’s political, economic and social developments and their consequences for Europe. Working with MERICS provides challenging and intellectually stimulating opportunities.

MERICS values diversity and is committed to building an inclusive work environment for colleagues of all backgrounds. We are based in Berlin, and our working language is English. Knowledge of Chinese is in most cases a must, (knowledge of German and other languages is an asset).

MERICS Fellowship Program

The MERICS fellowship program aims to attract distinguished as well as emerging thought leaders on China from academia, think tanks, the policy-making and business community, and media. Fellows work closely with the wider MERICS research team, often pursuing individual research priorities and contributing to wider MERICS research efforts at the same time. While the MERICS Fellowship Program offers long-term opportunities of association, most fellows spend between two to six months at MERICS.

European China Talent Program

The European China Talent Program (ECTP) encourages young European professionals to hone their understanding of contemporary China and the ways it affects Europe. Launched by MERICS in 2015, the ECTP takes place each year in spring and gathers a select group of 15 young European professionals with a track record of exposure to China and the potential to excel in their given professions.
